About Ethiopian Coffee

Unlike many coffee-growing countries in Africa, Ethiopia has integrated the consumption of coffee into the daily lives of its population. This is evident in the traditional coffee ceremonies that are carried out daily as friends and family relax and catch up.

There are a number of regions within the country that cultivate coffee, the most well-known being Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, Limu/Jimma. and Guji. Most of this coffee is grown by individual family farms, with only a small percent being produced on estates.

A land of coffee diversity

As the widely accepted origin of coffee, the varied Ethiopian climate has had plenty of time to develop its coffee varietals. The result of this is the largest range of genetic diversity in Arabica coffee found in any one country.

These thousands of varietals can be divided into two main categories:

Landraces represent the large number of native coffee varietals that have evolved naturally across Ethiopia.

JARC refers to varietals developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center to benefit and maintain Ethiopia’s coffee production via improved crop yield and pest/disease resistance.

Though there are names for some individual Ethiopian varietals, identifying all of them would be difficult due to the sheer number of genetically distinct variations growing in close proximity to one another. There simply isn’t the funding for researchers to go out and categorise each and every coffee tree, so many producers will refer to their coffees by the wider categories instead.
