Mecota Trading
Mecota Trading is a coffee exporter that operates as an alternative to the traditional Ethiopian Commodity Exchange, supporting farmers by allowing them access to international markets.

Established in 2023 and located in Addis Abba, we work with Mecota because they promote transparency and honesty in the coffee market.
About Mecota Trading
Before founding Mecota Trading, owner Moata Raya spent 15 years working with TechnoServe, a nonprofit that promotes business solutions to poverty, to assist Ethiopian producers in finding alternative markets outside of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange.

Using the contacts and experience built up during this time, Moata has been able to set up an exporting business that connects farmers to buyers who want sustainability for the coffee industry and every actor in the supply chain.

Producer vs exporter
The majority of the coffee exported from Ethiopia is done so through the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), the most easily accessible market for smallholders. However the ECX pools together coffees by region, and doesn't retain the information of the farmers who grew it, making it difficult to source traceable coffee using this system.

Since the farmers themselves often don’t have the resources to export their coffees independently, an exporter who’s willing to work directly with farmers is essential for preserving the information behind the coffee.
This is where Mecota Trading comes in. Mecota is not a producer, but they are vital in the process of acquiring traceable coffees from Ethiopia, handling the bureaucratic and logistical aspects of shipping while also passing on information about the farmers they source from and maintaining visibility throughout the supply chain.
