About Zambian Coffee

Divided between smallholders and five large-scale estates, the majority of Zambia’s coffee growing sector is concentrated in the Muchinga Mountains of Northern Province, which has ideal rainfall and temperatures for coffee growth. Other large estates are established in Serenje and around the capital city of Lusaka within the Southern Province.

1000 - 1600 meters above sea level

May - Sept harvests

1500 tonnes produced annually

51st largest arabica exporter

A landscape of untapped potential

Rich copper deposits have always featured as Zambia’s major export, however in an effort to introduce an additional revenue stream, the World Bank, along with the Zambian Government and later the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) established a number of coffee projects across the country in the 1970s.

These projects set off a boom in smallholder coffee cultivation that boosted coffee production within Zambia, though withdrawal of funding as well as a drought in 2005/2006 lead to many farmers uprooting their trees in favour of more reliable crops.

Despite this, Zambia remains a potentially excellence source of coffee with favourable climates and abundant water supplies. With proper planning, the country could produce some exceptional coffee for those willing to invest in the industry.
